Bushcraft Show – Almost Upon Us

Well at the end of this week (24th May 2014) I will be at the Bushcraft Show in Derbyshire. It looks like it is going to be very busy time and you can see what is on and when here on each days time-table as well as the main stage time-table. It certainly looks like the folks at the Bushcraft show have been busy behind the scenes and if you haven’t already got your tickets now would be a good time!

As some of you may already know I will be reporting from the Bushcraft Show for the guys at Sumo Survival and you can listen in to the show at 1 pm on Saturday and Sunday by clicking here

Keep Up To Date During The Show

I will be publishing as much as I can during the show to this website, but will also be using Twitter @Fugitve_Craft and Instagram or you can click the Bushcraft Show Tab above for a round-up

Interviews

I will be interviewing the man tracker Perry McGee (Son of Eddie McGee – No Need to Die) of the National Tracking School and will be asking him about his new version of No Need To Die and about some of his other books he has coming out. Also have Interviews with Chris Caine and seeing what he is up to and what his plans are for the year.  Jon Paul Lamoureux from Woodlife Trails as well as Tom Linden on Nuclear Survival. I will be catching up with friends and talking to the traders as well.

I am hoping to get an interview with “Lofty” Wiseman, it may be a case of tackling him to the ground and tying him to a chair (should give me about 30 second interview before he escapes) but this is not set or arranged, but I hope it happens…

If you have questions you would like to ask Chris, Perry, Jon-Paul, Tom or Lofty leave them in the comments box bellow and I will do my best

Reviews

I will be doing some product reviews during the Bushcraft Show and using some new kit for the first time like the Hobo Stove from Kelly Kettle and their Camping Cup Set.

I also have a Ribz Front Pack to pack in different ways and try it out as a tracking rig/pack.

For Stealth Camping I will also be trying and reviewing Trekmates Flameless Cook Box and Flask which are ideal for when lighting fires is not possible and you need to be more covert as well as some other stuff!

Special Offer

Readers of Fugitive Bushcraft can also get a special discount from LAW Industries on any survival and Escape and Evasion/SERE products, but you are going to have to check back on  Friday  for the details…

A great video from Veidemann Bushcraft who shows by adding a Horsetail Lanyard to a typical 4 inch bushcraft knife that you can chop with it.

For stealth camping I typically don’t carry a big knife like a Khukuri, parang or machete,  as they are designed for chopping, yet in survival applications where speed is needed, such as making a quick tent-peg to stop a tarp blowing away; then there may be an advantage of chopping over whittling.

It is a simple addition to your knife providing you have a lanyard hole, and it may be possible to use other lanyard set ups too. The amount of cord (parachute cord used in the video) is Two meters so you have a decent and useful length for a bow drill or similar lashings

I love my little Fallkniven F1, but there have been times I wish it could chop, or even slash for collecting grasses

Do you have any similar tips to – How To Chop With A Small Bushcraft Knife that you would like to share if so add them to the comments bellow…

Shrunken Head Bead – Laughing Ninja

This is a recycled wooden bead with glow in the dark eyes (this one is blue) made by knife maker Ru Titley ( Ru-Titley Knives )
Seen here attached to the neck cord of my Brazilian Tarp Hat

Works great as a personal kit marker/locater and as a bead. The glow lasts considerably long considering it’s made out of powder, glue and voodoo and its small size, but is not over bright as to give you away and you only see it when you get close to 15 yards or nearer.
Really cool/useful accessory that adds that touch of style by a great craftsman

AKU Pilgrim DS
(Desert Beige)

Received these boots this morning!

The AKU Pilgrim is based on the boot designed by AKU for the US Navy Seals.

The Pilgrims in short are a beefed up boot with stiffer last for all day patrolling and load carrying and have a regular Vibram sole. They come in two types, a non waterproof – highly breathable version for desert conditions and a GoreTex version (also available in all black)

Needles to say they are sought after by the guys based in Hereford.
Full review and testing coming soon…

Quick Travel Tip – Conflict Countries

If you are having to stay in a county where conflict has broken out and you are in a hotel or similar try moving or getting a room on the first floor, it’s less further to jump if you need an emergency exit.

However make sure the view from your window is of a side street as less  fighting and large artillery is often less intense on smaller streets

Your Cell Phone is Not Always Your Friend

In February, journalists Remi Ochlick and Marie Colvin were killed when shells struck the press center that they and other journalists were using to transmit their stories; the Syrian army may have used satellite signals from the center to target it.

This is quite a useful guide in the way it shows how cell phones or Satellite phones can be tracked, and although written for journalists, it applies to any one who is being hunted

Quick Update – Khukri on its way

I have been busy behind the scenes, and have some kit to review, and I am also about to purchase a Gurkha’s Khukri a tool that I haven’t used in quite a few years and actually miss I prefer big knives over the smaller 4 inch bladed bushcraft knife. It goes back to being in the forces and having to work quickly, and the need to be able to make shelters, clear woodland, and a mammoth evasion tool etc. I have been looking at quite a few videos about the khukri and I am amazed at how much information is wrong so ill correct a few points on that in a video review
